The Dunas de Artola stands as a precious remnant of the area's original natural habitat, offering a glimpse into the untouched beauty of this coastal region. While the original expanse of these dunes spanned an impressive 21 kilometers, much of it has given way to development. Today, only 1.2 kilometers of this pristine natural wonder remains, and it has earned the well-deserved distinction of being declared a natural monument.
The title of "natural monument" bestows upon the Dunas de Artola a heightened level of protection. This means that these dunes are safeguarded from any form of walking, driving, or construction, preserving their natural state as intended by Mother Nature herself.
For those eager to explore this remarkable sanctuary, a 2.4-kilometer suspended boardwalk gracefully winds its way through and around the dunes, offering an immersive and educational experience. The stroll along this boardwalk typically takes around 30 minutes, allowing visitors to soak in the unspoiled beauty and rich biodiversity of the area.
Access points to the boardwalk can be found at the main carpark and in the village adjacent to the historic Roman lookout tower, Torre Ladrones, which stands as a fascinating relic of the past. While wandering through the Dunas de Artola, keep an eye out for the remarkable wildlife that calls this environment home, adding another layer of natural wonder to your exploration. Without a doubt, a visit to this natural monument is an experience well worth your time.
