Sohail Castle, located to the west of Fuengirola along the A7 road towards Marbella, has a rich and turbulent history. Originally constructed by the Moors, it was later seized by Christian forces in 1485. In 1810, the castle saw control change hands once again when Napoleon's troops took charge. A dramatic battle unfolded in 1811 when Spanish and British forces attempted to regain control but faced overwhelming odds. Led by Lord Blayney, they were outnumbered ten to one and outgunned but valiantly failed to capture the castle, with Lord Blayney himself being captured during the battle. In 1812, the Spanish successfully reclaimed the castle.
Subsequently, Sohail Castle fell into disrepair due to neglect, with no practical use. However, in 1989, the castle underwent extensive restoration, transforming it into a captivating tourist attraction. During the summer months, the castle and its surroundings host a variety of concerts and festivals, adding to its allure.
While the interior of the castle may not boast extensive attractions, the panoramic views from the castle's hill are a rewarding highlight. The vistas encompass the town and the Mediterranean, making the uphill climb well worth it.
Moreover, Sohail Castle serves as an excellent parking spot for those visiting Fuengirola. For more detailed information about this historical site, please refer to the additional resources provided below.
