The Alcazaba, a masterpiece constructed by the Hammudid dynasty, stands as a testament to both history and architectural ingenuity. It's renowned as the best-preserved fortress palace in Spain and often compared to the illustrious Krak Des Chevaliers in Syria, underlining its exceptional historical significance.
The primary entrance to this remarkable fortress is located on Calle Alcazabilla, adjacent to the Roman theater, offering a seamless blend of historical sites within close proximity. Intriguingly, the Alcazaba was built atop a former Roman garrison, with much of the stonework repurposed from the original structure, further connecting the past to the present.
For those who seek an alternate entry point, Calle Guillen Sotelo holds a well-marked entrance, "Asencor A la Alcazaba," which leads visitors through a tunnel to an elevator, providing a unique and convenient path to the Alcazaba's interior.
Inside the Alcazaba, visitors are greeted by a network of winding walkways, ancient defenses, and lush gardens, creating a captivating journey through centuries of history. Of note, on Sunday afternoons from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, the Alcazaba opens its gates for free entry, making it an accessible and rewarding destination for all.
The Alcazaba undoubtedly stands as one of the main attractions in Malaga, offering a memorable experience that includes not only a rich historical narrative but also stunning gardens and breathtaking vistas, ensuring it's a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the vibrant cultural heritage of the region.
