1. Overview

Castillo de Gibralfaro is a historic fortress that dominates Málaga's skyline from its hilltop position above the city. Originally built during the Moorish period and expanded in the 14th century by Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada, the castle played a key defensive role in protecting the nearby Alcazaba and the city below. Today it is one of Málaga's most visited attractions, known as much for its incredible views as its historical significance.

2. Location & Address

The castle is located on Mount Gibralfaro overlooking Málaga city centre.

Address: Camino de Gibralfaro, 11, Málaga, Spain

Its elevated position provides unrivalled views across the city, port, and coastline.

3. Opening Times & Accessibility

Opening times vary throughout the year, Summer: 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Winter: 09:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. it is advisable to check current opening hours before visiting.  Entry 2.20 euro or

3.55 euro to include the Alcazaba.

Free Sundays after 2:00pm Visitors should be aware that the castle is built on a steep hillside with uneven surfaces, steps, and cobbled walkways. While some areas are accessible, parts of the fortress may be challenging for those with limited mobility.

4. Parking

Limited parking is available near the castle itself, but spaces can fill quickly, especially during the summer months.

Many visitors choose to park in Málaga city centre and either walk up to the castle or take the Number 35 bus from Paseo del Parque, which stops directly outside the entrance.

5. How to Get There

On Foot

One of the most popular ways to visit is via the pathway that begins near the Jardines de Pedro Luis Alonso and the Alcazaba entrance on Calle Guillén Sotelo.

The route follows the castle walls and gradually climbs to the summit, with several viewpoints along the way.

By Bus

The Number 35 bus departs from Paseo del Parque and travels directly to the castle entrance.

By Car

The castle can be reached by road via Camino de Gibralfaro, although parking near the summit is limited.

6. Nearby Attractions

  • Alcazaba of Málaga
  • Roman Theatre
  • Málaga Cathedral
  • Jardines de Pedro Luis Alonso
  • Málaga Port
  • Centre Pompidou Málaga

Many visitors combine the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro into a single day of sightseeing.

  • Historic fortress walls and towers
  • Military history exhibits
  • Panoramic viewpoints
  • Walking paths around the battlements
  • Views of Málaga city, port, mountains, and coastline
  • Information displays covering the castle's history

8. Tips for Visiting

  • Visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon during summer to avoid the hottest temperatures.
  • Bring water, especially if walking up from the city centre.
  • Wear comfortable footwear as the pathways can be steep and uneven.
  • Stop at the viewpoint approximately three-quarters of the way up for some of the best photographs of Málaga Port and the city.
  • Consider combining your visit with the Alcazaba, which is located directly below the castle.
