The Plaza de Toros in Ronda is a remarkable and historic site, considered the birthplace of modern bullfighting. Constructed between 1779 and 1784, it is the oldest bullring made entirely of stone. It serves as the home of the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda, Spain's oldest and most prestigious horsemanship order.
While Ronda's bullring boasts a seating capacity of approximately 5,000—much smaller than Seville's 10,000—it is notable for having the largest sand circle (rueda) in any bullring. This feature highlights its unique design and importance in bullfighting history.
Ronda claims the distinction of hosting the first-ever bullfight, although the inaugural event faced challenges when part of the stands collapsed, resulting in a year-long closure for repairs. During this period, Seville rose in prominence as a center for bullfighting.
Today, bullfights are still held in Ronda, albeit less frequently than in the past, making each event a significant cultural experience.
