Welcome to The Beach & Promenade

The promenade and beaches in La Cala de Mijas are among the most popular on the Costa del Sol, combining a relaxed seaside atmosphere with a traditional village feel. The long beachfront promenade is perfect for walking, with beach bars, restaurants, cafés, and wide sandy beaches stretching along the coastline, making it ideal for families, couples, and visitors looking for a quieter alternative to the larger resorts.

Information on the Beach & Promenade

1. Overview

Playa La Cala is the main beach in La Cala de Mijas and one of the most popular family-friendly beaches on the Costa del Sol. The beach is backed by a long promenade and coastal boardwalk, with wide sandy areas, beachfront restaurants, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it popular with both visitors and locals throughout the year.

2. Location & Access

The beach is located directly in front of the village centre, within easy walking distance of shops, bars, restaurants, and nearby accommodation. The promenade and boardwalk connect different sections of the coastline, making it ideal for walking and cycling.

3. Beach Facilities

Playa La Cala offers good facilities including:

  • sunbeds and parasols
  • showers and toilets
  • lifeguards during summer months
  • beach bars and chiringuitos
  • nearby cafés and restaurants

The beach was awarded Blue Flag status for its water quality, cleanliness, safety, and visitor facilities.

4. Parking

There are two main free parking areas commonly used when visiting La Cala de Mijas. The largest is the fairground parking area on the edge of the village, although much of this becomes unavailable on Saturdays during the weekly market or when local fairs and events are taking place.

There is also free parking in the centre  the village centre and beach, but this area is often managed informally by local parking attendants who may help direct drivers into spaces and usually expect a small tip of around €1. During busy periods, paying the small fee is often the easiest way to avoid problems and secure a space close to the beach and promenade. For more information on parking click the link below.

5. Nearby Attractions

  • La Cala boardwalk and promenade
  • village bars and restaurants
  • beachfront chiringuitos
  • coastal walking routes
  • local markets and cafés

6. What to Expect

Playa La Cala has a relaxed and traditional seaside atmosphere compared to some of the larger Costa del Sol resorts. The beach is popular with families due to the calm setting, flat promenade, and lack of busy roads directly along the seafront.

7. Tips for Visiting

  • Arrive early in summer for easier parking
  • The promenade and boardwalk are ideal for evening walks
  • Many beachfront restaurants become busy at lunchtime and sunset
  • Comfortable footwear is recommended if walking longer sections of the boardwalk

8. Overall Experience

Playa La Cala combines a traditional village atmosphere with a clean, well-maintained beach and one of the best seaside walking routes on the Costa del Sol.
