Perched on the hillside overlooking Mijas Pueblo, the Ermita del Calvario is a hidden gem with a fascinating history. Built in 1710, this small whitewashed chapel once served as a spiritual retreat for Carmelite monks, offering them a place of solitude and reflection.
Today, the chapel opens its doors only on Fridays during Lent, so there’s no need to search for regular visiting hours. However, the real draw of the Ermita del Calvario isn’t just what’s inside—it’s the breathtaking panoramic views of Mijas, the coastline, and the Mediterranean beyond.
The 20-minute uphill walk from the village center might look intimidating from below, but don’t let that discourage you. The path is well-trodden and manageable with comfortable footwear, rewarding you with some of the most stunning vistas on the Costa del Sol. Along the way, you’ll pass pine trees, wildflowers, and peaceful surroundings, making it a great short hike for those wanting to escape the bustle of town.
Whether you’re drawn by the history, the scenery, or simply the sense of peace that surrounds this chapel, the Ermita del Calvario is well worth the effort.
